The Efficacy of Silymarin and Vitamin E in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Clinical Trial
Authors
Abstract:
Abstract Objective: Nowadays, lifestyle modification is the best treatment recommended to patients with the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The therapeutic effects of vitamin E and silybin on liver functions were documented. The present study was conducted to examine the effect of silymarin and vitamin E on patients with NAFLD. Materials and Methods: From September 2014 to March 2015, clinical trial was conducted on 92 patients with NAFLD at 2 Shahid Sadoughi university clinical research centers. Sampling was based on convenient method. There were no randomization or blinding in this study, but two types of treatments were compared. The patients were divided in two groups of daily intake of vitamin E (400 IU) and Silymarin 280 mg for four months. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and liver ultrasonography were done at baseline and after four months. Results: Eighty patients completed the course of treatment successfully .After 4 months, both groups had experienced a significant reduction in their serum ALT levels. The mean change in the ALT level from the baseline was -31.6 U/L in the silymarin group vs. -15.1 U/L in the vitamin E group (P-value= 0.07). Treatment with silymarin was more effective than vitamin E (P-value< 0.0001). The mean ALT level changed to normal was 55.0% (22 of 40 patients )in the silymarin group, while it was 45.0% (18 of 40 cases) in the vitamin E group (P-value= 0.04). Conclusion: The treatment of NAFLD with silymarin appears to be significantly effective in biochemical improvement whereas treatment with vitamin E improves ultrasonographic parameters.

Comparison of the Therapeutic Effects of Melatonin, Metformin and Vitamin E on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background and Objective: Currently, no therapeutic or surgical treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been officially approved. This is a serious void in the medical field given the increasing prevalence of NAFLD cases in developing countries. Our study compared the therapeutic effect of metformin, melatonin and vitamin E on serum parameters that are associated with NAFLD ...

Background & Objective: Nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) is the major cause of hepatocellular carcinoma and increases the risk of mortality. Understanding the trends of its clinical and biochemical changes is essential to identify patients with NAFLD that are at the greatest risk of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis in Iran. M...
full textEffects of Citrulline on Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Randomized-controlled Clinical Trial
Background and Objectives: Citrulline (cit.) is a non-essential amino acid derived from watermelon, which affects improving glucose tolerance and lipid and energy metabolisms. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of citrulline supplementation on non-alcoholic fatty liver. Materials & Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 50 patients with NAFLD were randomly assigned to recei...
full textEffect of silymarin plus vitamin E in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A randomized clinical pilot study.
OBJECTIVE Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an increasingly recognized health problem. Various treatment strategies such as thiazolidinediones, metformin, lipid-lowering agents and antioxidants have been evaluated. So far, no single intervention has convincingly improved liver histology. Experience of using silymarin alone or in combination with other agents in patients with NAFLD is...
full textVitamin E Therapy in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to oxidative stress. Vitamin E (VE) is an effective antioxidant, which could relieve NAFLD symptoms by improving the balance of oxidation and anti-oxidation. However, recent researches indicate that the functional mechanisms of VE are not only limited to anti-oxidation, but also include adjusting the metabolism disorders of glucose an...
full textOutcome of Phlebotomy on Improvement of Liver Enzymes and Steatosis in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Randomized, Controlled Trial
Background and Objective: Iron overload in the liver can potentially induce non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, we sought to evaluate the phlebotomy in NAFLD, and compare it with modifiedlife style. Materials and Methods: This randomized, single-blind, clinical trial was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of phlebotomy on liver enzymes and steatosis in NAFLD patients. F...
